Some people may call this the showdown of the year. Some will just say that it’s just an unfair competition between the hare and the turtle. For those who owns an iPad 2, I’m sure they would want to know how much better, really, is the new iPad (or iPad 3 as some prefers calling) before they jump the bandwagon.
In this showdown, I’ve done 5 rounds of tests. The bootup time, the web loading time, resolution comparison, online video loading and playback and the shutdown time.
In the bootup time test, the new iPad wins the iPad 2 hands down by 3 seconds. Quite impressive, actually. But then again, with the new processor in the new iPad, it should boot up faster.
In the web loading time test, both the new iPad and the iPad 2 loads the webpage equally fast.
In the resolution comparison test, under the naked eyes, I can see that the resolution of the new iPad is sharper than the iPad 2. The texts and the images do look better on the new iPad in my own opinion. When I zoomed in the webpage all the way to the maximum, the sharpness of the texts and images on the new iPad are more noticeable. But who would actually zoom in to the fullest when doing normal web browsing?
In the online video loading and playback tests, both the new ipad and the iPad 2 started playing the video at the same time.
However, as the video progresses, the iPad 2 experienced a hipcup at one point where the video was stalled for around 7 seconds. When playing the video in portrait mode, the video resolution on the two devices are equally good. We shall do a more thorough test with the videos played in the landscape mode soon to decide whether or not the video quality is really that fantastic on the new iPad.
In the final shutdown test time test, there is a suprise winner! Who would have thought that the iPad 2 would be the winner! The iPad 2 shuts down 1 second faster than the new iPad! :p
So is the new iPad worth the commotion? You be the judge!
